mfa in properties technology & Design

The LSU School of Theatre is proud to be one of the few departments in the country to offer the MFA in Theatre: Specialization in Properties Technology. 

The course of study includes a detailed examination of the many and varied items considered properties, and different techniques and materials that can be used to create them. The intention of this course of study is to develop advanced skills in woodworking, metalworking, practical application of electrical circuitry and wiring in props, digital and graphic manipulation and design, paper-mâché, foam carving, mold making and casting, puppetry, upholstery and drapery, flat patterning, sewing, period research, leadership, and project management. The curriculum is augmented with classes in scenic and costume design, painting for the theatre, CAD, and dramaturgy. All students will undertake production positions on LSU Mainstage and Swine Palace productions. Teaching, Design and management opportunities exist for the qualified student.

Potential applicants should express interest by contacting the program Head prior to completing the Graduate School’s on-line application. Applicants must meet all requirements for admission to the Graduate School at LSU. In addition to the Graduate School’s on-line application, all applicants must submit a letter of intent, resume, three letters of recommendation, and representative portfolio on CD or online website. An on-site interview is required of all applicants.

All applicants will be evaluated based on evidence of academic and practical achievement and artistic promise, as indicated by grade point average, portfolio review, letters of recommendation, and, where applicable, TOEFL scores. 

  • Three consecutive years of residency
  • 66 graduate credit hours
  • Six credit hours in THTR 8000 (thesis research)
  • Written thesis including oral defense of work
