About the Library

The LSU Vet Med Library provides quality scholarly resources, services, and instruction to support the education and research programs of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine.

Established in 1974, the Library is a major health science library in the greater Baton Rouge area and serves the faculty, staff and students of the School of Veterinary Medicine as well as the LSU and Baton Rouge communities. The Library is a member of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine South Central Region and the Animal and Veterinary Information Specialist Caucus of the Medical Libraries Association.

Located on the first floor of the School of Veterinary Medicine building, the Library's current holdings include both print and electronic resources dealing with all aspects of veterinary medicine, as well as selected materials on human medicine, comparative medicine, public health, the animal sciences and other related areas.

Vision: Enriching knowledge to empower our users to advance One Health.

Mission: Fostering excellence in education, research, and the community well-being by providing outstanding resources, services, instruction, and outreach initiatives.

Any person may visit the Veterinary Medicine Library and use materials, databases, and resources on-site. Due to licensing restrictions, the electronic resources are not accessible by non-School of Veterinary Medicine users outside of the library.

LSU Faculty, Staff, and Students

Faculty, staff, and students of LSU with a valid University identification may check out non-restricted monographs. Reserve materials, audio visual materials, and journals are restricted to loans for School of Veterinary Medicine personnel only. LSU’s policy states that graduating student privileges expire on graduation day.

Non-LSU Affiliated Patrons

Non-LSU affiliated patrons unable to visit the LSU Vet Med Library may request literature searches and reference help, as well as articles and book chapters through the LSU Vet Med Library's Public Services department by emailing svmlibrary@lsu.edu or by calling 225-578-9800.

LSU Vet Med Visiting Scholars, Adjunct or Locum

For extended privileges to access online resources, a sponsored guest account would need to be created. The sponsoring LSU Vet Med department initiates the request to the Library. Upon approval, Computer Services then creates a sponsored guest account.

LSU Vet Med Alumni

LSU Vet Med alumni, veterinary, health care, and legal professionals are invited and encouraged to use the services of the LSU Vet Med Library.
