BIOL 4800
Special Topics

BIOL 4800 Section 1: Introduction to Systems Biology of the Cell – Dr. Nao Kato

BIOL 4800 Section 2: Epigenetics – Dr. Joo Kim

BIOL 4800 Section 1:  Introduction to Systems Biology of the Cell – Dr. Nao Kato

3 credit hours, 1:30-2:50 pm (T Th)

Course Description: This course aims to understand molecular cell biology quantitatively by translating molecular reactions to ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and analyzing them computationally.  At the end of the course, the students should be able to analyze large networks of interacting molecules in cells. Contact Dr. Kato kato@lsu.edu for more information.

The course will count toward the Group 1 elective requirement in BIOL, or as an approved BCH or MBIO elective. Enrollment maximum = 15.

BIOL 4800 Section 2:  Epigenetics – Dr. Joo Kim

3 credit hours, 3:00-5:50 PM (Th)

Course Description: Open to both undergraduates and graduate students (as BIOL 7800). The inheritance patterns of living organisms can be explained not only through genetic but also through epigenetic mechanisms.  This class will discuss the main mechanisms of epigenetics, DNA and histone modifications, and also the associated phenomena, genomic imprinting, reprogramming and cancers.

Overlapped with graduate course BIOL 7800. Undergraduate prerequisites = BIOL 3090, plus BIOL 4087 or BIOL 4093, or permission of instructor.

The course will count toward the Group 1 elective requirement in BIOL, or as an approved BCH or MBIO elective. Enrollment maximum = 10.
