Discover Nature Programs
Through a partnership with the Louisiana Master Naturalist of Greater Baton Rouge (LMNGBR) we are proud to offer exciting new Discover Nature programs featuring local and national experts who are in touch with nature and are eager to share their experiences. All programs will be held in the Imo Brown Complex in the Beverly Brown Coates Auditorium at Hilltop Arboretum.
For Hilltop, LMNGBR members, and students registration is $10, $15 for non-members. Discover Nature programs are free for Members Magnolia Level ($250) and above.
Connecting and Healing with Louisiana Medicinal Plants
Featuring Corinne Martin
Tuesday, April 23, 6:30-8pm
Corinne Martin, author of Louisiana Herb Journal, joins us to discuss the importance
of the relationship between humans and their environment and how she makes herbal
medicine. Corinne will share her perspective on how to get to know one’s own “home
ground” through a lens of healing and participation. Participants will gain a deeper
recognition of ways that our stewardship of plants can impact our personal health
as well as Louisiana’s ecological future. During the program, Corinne will provide
a demonstration of how to make herbal remedies with plants outlined in her book.
The Louisiana Herb Journal and plants featured in the book will be available for purchase during the lecture.
Corinne Martin is an author of three books, and numerous articles on medicinal plants and healing. She is a certified clinical herbalist, an amateur naturalist, an ordained Interfaith Minister, and a certified spiritual director. Corinne has recently retired from teaching holistic and integrative health studies at the University of Southern Maine School of Nursing, and resides in both Louisiana and Maine.
Monarchs, Migration, Milkweed and Oe
Featuring Linda Barber Auld

Linda Barber Auld, affectionately known as the NOLA BugLady, joins us to discuss monarch
butterflies and the ecosystem of insects that visit milkweed plants. Linda will trace
the history of the University of Kansas Monarch Watch Tagging Program and share the
results of three fascinating university research studies on monarchs. Participants
will learn how to tell the difference between native and non-native milkweed and learn
more about the Oe parasite infection. Linda will share how the discovery affects our
region and provide updated recommendations on how to address the infection.
Linda Barber Auld, affectionately known as the NOLA BugLady, has raised 148 species of butterflies and moths while studying and photographing their life cycles. For 45 years, as owner and operator of Barber Laboratories pest control store, Linda helped New Orleanians solve their pest problems while also studying and promoting the understanding beneficial insects. Linda has written articles for Louisiana and Mississippi Native Plant Societies, Orleans and Baton Rouge Audubon Societies, and Southern Lepidopterist Society newsletters. She has performed 30 years of butterfly count surveys for the North American Butterfly Association. To help monarch butterflies, Linda has installed seventeen school gardens in the New Orleans area, enhanced gardens in four Louisiana welcome centers, donated countless plants to public park gardens, and created monarch waystations in seven Louisiana cities and one at Gloster Arboretum in Mississippi.
