2020 LSU Summer Scholars Update:

Our nation and world have experienced a remarkable time as concerns of the coronavirus (COVID-19) continue to evolve each moment. We empathize with families who have directly been impacted, whether through illness, quarantine, or disruption of everyday life. When considering how the coronavirus pandemic would impact or summer program, our main focus was the safety and well-being of our potential cohort members. On April 1, Louisiana State University announced the decision to move Summer Sessions and Summer Intersession to an online format due to the coronavirus outbreak throughout the U.S. and Louisiana. We revisited our 2020 Summer Scholars Program planning efforts to consider a Fall 2020 cohort, and realized a Fall cohort would deviate from our program’s purpose and structure, which is a nine-week summer bridge program that prepares selected under-represented students to make a successful transition from high school to the University. It is with great regret that University College will be unable to admit the Summer Scholars’ class of 2020.

This decision was not made lightly. We consulted with our leadership, Summer Scholar Alumni, and other campus programs before finalizing our decision. The Summer Scholars Program has earned a reputation of excellence for its commitment to the intellectual development of its students since its inception in 1991. For many of us, the 2020 year will be forever ingrained in our memory for many different reasons. For us, 2020 will be the year of social distancing; the year we didn’t have a 2020 cohort. “Once a Scholar, ALWAYS a scholar” is a statement Summer Scholar Alumni embrace and it pains us to know that we will not be able to welcome 2020 Summer Scholars participants into this rich legacy this year. Nonetheless, as we look forward, we are hopeful and excited to celebrate thirty years on our beautiful campus in 2021.
