The Graduate Experience
Effective communication is crucial to enacting positive change and innovation. At LSU’s Manship School of Mass Communication, we provide the next generation of media leaders with the knowledge and resources they need to make an impact in their respective fields. From journalism to political communication and public policy to public opinion research, our graduate students transition to industry leaders, and their success fuels our growth.
Our distinguished faculty will guide your advanced preparation in strategic communication, journalism and media & public affairs. At the Manship School, you will earn either a Ph.D. in Media & Public Affairs, a Master of Mass Communication or a Certificate in Strategic Communication.
The Manship School is the nation’s only mass communication program that offers a political communication emphasis at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral level. Our Ph.D. in Media & Public Affairs is one-of-a-kind and has placed graduates at top mass communication programs around the globe, including Indiana University, Temple University, American University of Beirut and Iowa State University, to name just a few. Our master’s program not only offers a focus in political communication but also journalism and strategic communication.
Beautiful Campus
Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, Louisiana State University's campus stretches 2,000 acres in Baton Rouge. More than 1,200 live oak trees shade many of our Italian Renaissance buildings. Home of the Manship School, the Journalism Building's back patio sits in the shadows of Tiger Stadium. Across campus are the LSU Lakes, a picturesque refuge where Baton Rouge residents walk, run, fish and kayak. Every winter, students await the arrival of thousands of white pelicans that migrate to the lakes.
Research Focus
Manship's cutting-edge research facilities include the Media Effects Lab, Social Media Analysis & Creation Lab and the Public Policy Research Lab. With the guidance of faculty advisers, our students conduct primary research for their dissertations, theses and professional projects. While the three main focuses at Manship are strategic communication, journalism and media & public affairs, our students may study specific areas of communication to further their academic or professional careers. It is our goal for students to become experts in their fields of interest, from sports journalism to science communication, from media effects theory to entertainment public relations and everything in between.
Community
Because the Manship School is LSU's second-smallest college, we are committed to creating a sense of community. Our tight-knit cohorts work hand-in-hand with faculty and staff. Students can also join one of LSU's hundreds of other student organizations.
