If you are helping somone impacted by domestic or sexual violence, remember that you can only take care of others when you take care of yourself. Supporting someone who is dealing with trauma can be emotionally and mentally exhausting. It is important to reach out to the same support resources to get the help you need, too. These resources are here to support you as well.

Support Resources at LSU

Lighthouse Program

The Lighthouse Program provides free and confidential interpersonal violence prevention, support, and advocacy to the LSU campus community. The program assists student-survivors of sexual assault, interpersonal violence, stalking, and harassment. The Lighthouse Program is physically located on the ground floor of the Student Health Center. The Lighthouse Program services are available Monday through Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Examples of Lighthouse assisting students: Provide support and develop a safety plan for students experiencing stalking; assist with initiating schedule changes for students experiencing victimization; support and accompany student through university judicial reporting process.

Student Health Center

The vision of the Student Health Center is to see students as active partners in maintaining their health. The mission of the SHC is to provide, promote, and support services that integrate individual health, education for health, prevention of disease, clinical treatment for illness, and public health responsibilities consistent with the educational mission of the University. The Student Health Center is in-network with most major health insurance plans.

  • Medical Clinic provides primary care, laboratory services, gynecology, and access to specialty clinics.
  • Mental Health Service (MHS) provides clinical services that enhance LSU students' personal growth and development, address psychological needs, and support the pursuit of academic goals.
  • Wellness & Health Promotion provides services consistent with the promotion of student success through education and skill development, to include sexual health and contraception, nutrition services,.

The LSU Student Health Center is obligated by federal law to keep patient information confidential. We will only share information with the written consent of patients, or in cases of an immediate threat to harm self or others.

ThePhone is a 24-hour crisis counseling and support line serving the students of LSU. Callers to the LSU line are connected to volunteer paraprofessional counselors trained in crisis intervention and suicide prevention. Common reasons students call or text ThePhone:

  • You want help with an immediate personal crisis.
  • You are thinking about suicide.
  • You are feeling distressed.
  • You are in therapy or waiting to see a therapist, but need to talk with someone now.

LSU Police

The LSU Police Department is organized as a traditional police department and Officers are commissioned with statewide arrest authority, per Louisiana Revised Statute (LRS) 17:1805. This means all LSU Police Officers are peace officers with authority to enforce state law. They provide a full range of law enforcement services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

LSU PD has jurisdiction on all LSU property. However, when a crime originates on LSU property, LSU PD's jurisdiction extends to any area in the state of Louisiana where the investigation may lead.

Sexual Trauma Awareness and Response (STAR)

Sexual Trauma Awareness and Response (STAR) is a Baton Rouge organization committed to supporting survivors of sexual trauma. STAR provides supportive services to survivors to reduce their experience of trauma. Their advocacy, counseling and legal services are available to youth and adult survivors of sexual violence at no cost, and are intended to assist individuals at any stage of the healing process.

IRIS Domestic Violence Center

The IRIS Domestic Violence Center is a nonprofit organization that focuses on empowering survivors, preventing relationship violence, and promoting justice for victims of domestic and dating violence, their children, and our communities. They offer the following services: counseling, legal advocacy, housing, and community outreach. IRIS serves: Ascension Parish, East Baton Rouge Parish, Iberville Parish, Pointe Coupee Parish, West Baton Rouge Parish, West Feliciana Parish.

Louisiana Foundation Against Sexual Assault (LaFASA)

The Louisiana Foundation Against Sexual Assault (LaFASA) is committed to empowering survivors, engaging advocates, and changing systems and social norms to end sexual violence in Louisiana. They offer support and assistance to anyone affected by sexual violence through our statewide crisis hotline, legal services, information and referral services, connecting survivors with local resources, and some direct advocacy service.

LaFASA also offers free, anonymous, and confidential support to all survivors and their loved ones statewide through their Helpline.

Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN)

The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) (RAINN) is the nation’s largest anti-sexual assault organization. RAINN operates the Nation Sexual Assault Hotline and carries out programs to prevent sexual assault, help victims and ensure that rapists are brought to justice.

National Sexual Violence Resource Center

The National Sexual Assault Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) is a comprehensive collection and distribution center for information, research and emerging policy on sexual violence intervention and prevention. The NSVRC provides an extensive online library and customized technical assistance as well as coordinates National Sexual Assault Awareness Month initiatives. 

National Center for Victims of Crime

The National Center for Victims of Crime (NCVC) is the nation’s leading resource and advocacy organization for crime victims. Since 1985, NCVC has worked with more than 10,000 grassroots organizations and criminal justice agencies – serving millions of crime victims. 

National Coalition Against Domestic Violence

The mission of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) is to organize for collective power by advancing transformative work, thinking and leadership of communities to end the violence in our lives. 

National Network to End Domestic Violence

The National Network to End Domestic Violence aims to address the complex causes and far-reaching consequences of domestic violence. Through cross-sector collaborations at the state, national, and international levels, we are changing the way our society addresses and works to prevent domestic violence.

Trauma Information Pages
