Biography

Dr. Colomina Almiñana was born and raised in Alcoy, a small town in the mountains of the province of Alicante (Spain). He holds degrees from Universitat de València (B.A. and M.A.) and Universidad de La Laguna (Ph.D.), both in Spain. Dr. Colomina Almiñana is the author of a number of books and academic articles on the nature and structure of language and its use in specific contexts by concrete speech communities. His most recent publications include Contemporary Advances in Theoretical and Applied Spanish Linguistic VariationVariation and Evolution, and Language Patterns in Spanish. His current research efforts are centered in a book-length study on so-called “monsters” (linguistic elements whose meaning shifts depending on context), a book-length analysis of uses of derogatory words (such as Mock-Spanish), and a semantic comparison of Canary Islands Spanish and Guanche (an extinct Berber dialect that was spoken in the Islands for about two millenniums). Dr. Colomina Almiñana recent courses are Intermediate Spanish Grammar and Composition (SPAN 3010), Structure of the Spanish Language (SPAN 4005), Applied Spanish Linguistics (SPAN 4603), and Spanish Language Acquisition (SPAN 7983).
