Biography

Emily King is Associate Professor of Shakespeare and Renaissance Drama. Her first book, Civil Vengeance: Literature, Culture, and Early Modern Revenge, was published by Cornell University Press in 2019. Shifting attention from episodic revenge to quotidian forms, Civil Vengeance theorizes anew the manner in which retaliation informs identity formation, interpersonal relationships, and the construction of the social body. Her next book project, Second Acts: Reanimation in the English Renaissance, extends her earlier work on science and the social body as it explores reanimation in biological, theatrical, literary, and imaginative terms. Her research has been generously supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Shakespeare Folger Library, and the Louisiana Board of Regents. Beyond these book projects, her writing has been published in a variety of venues that include Studies in English Literature (SEL), Postmedieval, Comparative Drama, and several essay collections. Her teaching has earned multiple awards that include LSU’s Tiger Athletic Foundation Undergraduate Teaching Award and the Robert Udick Distinguished Teaching Undergraduate Award. Away from campus, she runs, hikes, knits, travels, and cooks delicious plant-based meals.
