Our History

LSU’s AFROTC Detachment 310 has been commissioning Lieutenants into the US Air Force for nearly 70 years.  Det 310 cadets were named the Flying Tigers after the legendary World War II volunteer aviation group led by LSU alumnus General Claire Chennault.  While the US was mainly focused on winning the war in Europe, Chennault’s Flying Tigers confounded and dominated a numerically superior Japanese force over China and restored hope to demoralized Americans at home.

Flying Tigers still soar over Moody AFB, Georgia, though the famous shark grins now decorate A-10 Thunderbolt IIs instead of P-51 Mustangs.  Today, LSU Det 310’s six cadre and 65 cadets honor those heroes by preparing the next generation of patriots for service in the world’s preeminent Air Force.  Every Veteran’s Day, LSU’s Cadets of the Ole War Skule sponsor LSU Salutes, a series of events in which present day Army, Navy, and Air Force cadets recognize the graduates of LSU’s ROTC programs.
