Domestic Non-Degree Seeking

A non-degree seeking applicant is one who wants to complete a few graduate courses and is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. International students are unable to apply as non-degree students; in rare cases, the International Services Office may grant an exception.


Step 1: Select a Graduate Program

LSU offers more than 120 graduate degree programs, more than 10 graduate certificates, and some courses can be completed online. Browse the list of programs offered and then click on the department’s link for additional information about available courses.


Step 2: Contact a Graduate Program Advisor

Some programs restrict non-degree students to particular courses or may not accept the work towards degree-seeking requirements if you later reapply as a degree-seeking student. Once you have determined which department you would like to apply to, contact its graduate advisor for additional information and to see if enrolling as a non-degree student is available. Their contact information is usually found under the “About” tab of the department’s homepage.


Step 3: Review Graduate School Admission Requirements

All applicants must have the following in order to be considered for non-degree admissions:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution or the equivalent from a foreign institution.
  • A grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.50 (A = 4.00) on all undergraduate work and a GPA of at least 3.00 on any graduate work already completed.


Step 4: Upload and Request Transcripts

Students applying for graduate non-degree admission must submit one transcript from the highest degree-granting institution and from each institution where graduate credit was earned or attempted. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable for the initial review of your application, and you can usually download them directly from the universities you attended.
