Geauxing Global: A Day in the Life

Baton Rouge, LA - Globally engaged. Collaborative. Culturally competent. All are words used to describe the Geaux Global exchange program through the LSU College of Human Sciences & Education. Geaux Global allows teachers the opportunity to teach English as a second language in Chile while living with a Chilean host family. Graduate student, Caroline Hulin, experienced Chilean culture first-hand and gained a new perspective on teaching through this unique summer abroad program.

This professional development program provides in-service and pre-service teachers the chance to teach in a Chilean classroom in partnership with Chilean teachers and students. The English focused school and the LSU team provide enriching professional development experiences for all participants. In addition to classroom experiences and professional development, participants live with host families and are able to better understand the cultural, emotional, and developmental supports provided to second-language learners.

While teaching in Chile, Hulin experienced the mutual benefits of staying with a host family and their two sons, enrolled in her school. Hulin was able to engage more richly with the local culture and enhance her Spanish-speaking skills while also enriching her host family’s English language education.

Hulin was published in Childhood Explorer, an international publication of the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI), with a story she wrote about a day in the life of one of the children in her host home.
