LSU Launches $1.5 Billion Fierce for the Future Campaign

Last week marked the public launch of the LSU "Fierce for the Future" campaign, the largest fundraising campaign for higher education in Louisiana history. This marks the first time all eight LSU campuses have come together for such an endeavor. The campaign's fundraising goal is $1.5 billion, with $571.2 million (approximately 38% of this goal) raised during the silent phase.

LSU Promotes Economic Development Through Research

LSU annually generates $5.1 billion in economic impact for Louisiana, and its collective success in securing competitive national research grants has served as a catalyst for future economic development.

The National Institutes of Health recently awarded the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine more than $11.5 million to launch the Center for Lung Biology and Disease and develop new treatment methods for lung diseases, which affect approximately 15% of Louisiana's population. Following along in that vein, LSU School of Veterinary Medicine Assistant Professor Yogesh Saini received a $2.7 million Outstanding New Environmental Scientist award from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to conduct innovative research on ozone-induced lung diseases.

The LSU AgCenter received $1 million from the federal government to study roseau cane, one of the Gulf Coast's most erosion-resistant and critical marsh plants.

LSU Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering Adam Melvin received approximately $500,000 from the National Science Foundation to help control protein degradation and create a more efficient diagnosis process for cancer and diabetes.

Three LSU faculty members were elected as senior members of the National Academy of Inventors in recognition of their profound impacts on society's welfare.

LSU Pioneers the Future

Dr. Paul G. Harch, the Director of Hyperbaric Medicine at LSU's School of Medicine, successfully treated a young boy's traumatic brain injury stemming from oxygen deprivation. Dr. Harch used innovative ‘Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Therapy,' which may be a breakthrough treatment for victims of oxygen-related brain damage as well as Alzheimer's.

LSU Geaux Vote, a non-partisan student organization that encourages students to honor their civic responsibility, received approval from the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Council to make LSU a central location for a new polling place in East Baton Rouge and allow students to vote on campus.

Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy and 14 other senators introduced the College Transparency Act, a bipartisan piece of legislation that would give students access to important outcomes-based information about colleges and universities allowing them to make informed decisions about their futures.

LSU Faculty Set the Standard for Excellence

Professor Jinx Broussard, LSU Manship School's Bart R. Swanson Endowed Memorial Professor, earned the 2018 Scripps Howard Foundation Teacher of the Year Award, in recognition of her expertise in teaching innovative and influential practices inside and outside the classroom.

World-renowned physicist and LSU Department of Physics & Astronomy Professor Gabriela González has been awarded the 2019 Southeastern Conference (SEC) Faculty Achievement Award. In 2015, González helped to confirm Albert Einstein's Theory of General Relativity when she contributed to the historic detection of gravitational waves.

Professor Emeritus William C. Black was recognized for his outstanding services to the Department of Marketing’s Ph.D. program, receiving the 2019 Doctoral Educator’s Award from the Southeast Marketing Symposium member universities.

Kalliat Valsaraj, Roddey Distinguished Professor and Ike East Professor of Chemical Engineering, was named as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the U.K.’s professional body for chemical scientists and experts.

Jean McGuire, William W. Rucks IV Endowed Chair and Professor of Management and department chair in the Rucks Department of Management, accepted a seat on the editorial board of Corporate Governance: An International Review (CGIR), a peer-reviewed academic journal recognized as one of the top publications regarding corporate governance-related issues ranging from accounting to political science.

Dr. Steven Heymsfield, Director of LSU's Pennington Biomedical Research Institution Metabolism and Body Composition Lab, was named to the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.

Three nurses from the #9 nationally ranked School of Nursing at LSU Health New Orleans, one physician from LSU Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, and one medical professional from LSUHSC School of Dentistry – LSU Health New Orleans were all recognized as 2019 Health Care Heroes.

LSU Student-Athletes Achieve Victory for LSU

LSU Gymnastics recently captured their third-straight SEC championship in front of an electric, record-breaking crowd at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.

The LSU Men's Basketball team finished on top of the standings to claim their 11th SEC title and first conference championship since the 2008-2009 season. 

LSU men's track and field athletes Rayvon Grey (long jump) and Mondo Duplantis (pole vault) won national championships at the NCAA Indoor Championships, becoming the first program in NCAA history to win both the long jump and pole vault at the event.

LSU Science Café | Ancient Underwater Forest

April 30, 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. at The Varsity Theatre


Join LSU Department of Geography & Anthropology Associate Professor Kristine DeLong as she shares her research on an underwater cypress forest discovered off the coast of Alabama. DeLong dived the underwater forest, excavated it, and analyzed samples of the wood and ancient pollen to find out how old the ancient forest is.

Doors open at 5 p.m. for networking and light refreshments, and the talk will start at 6 p.m. Remember, people of all ages are welcome, so please spread the word and join us for a fun and informative night!
