Areas of Specialization/Research:

I am the State Rice Pathologist specialist and responsible for developing and validating new technologies and management for disease control in the rice production system. Our lab collaborates with researchers from public and private institutions, growers, and extension agents to build an integrated pest management.

My research is focused on understanding the ecology and evolution of the disease in space and time, how it interacts with the environment, and yield loss estimation. We use statistical approaches to modeling these complex interactions and provide a better picture of the scenario seen in the field. Our studies efforts are currently concentrated on sheath blight (Rhizoctonia solani), blast (Pyricularia grisea), Cercospora (Cercospora janseana), bacterial panicle blight (Burkholderia glumae and B. gladioli), kernel smut (Tilletia barclayana), and false smut (Ustilaginoidea virens).

Our lab works closely with the Rice Breeding program to phenotype the disease reaction of commercial, pre-commercial, and in-development lines of rice varieties. We are also interested in the more applied aspects of disease control, such as chemical and biological control, application technology, and cultural management.
