Biography

Tara A Houston is delighted to be part of the faculty of the College of Music and Dramatic Arts serving as the Assistant Professor of Scenic Design. This year, in addition to designing for Swine Palace, she will be designing scenery for Austin Shakespeare in Texas, Casa Mañana in Ft Worth, Texas and Skylight Music Theatre in Milwaukee. This past summer, she was a scenic design respondent for the 2018 Latinx Theatre Commons Carnaval of New Latinx Work in Chicago. Previously, she taught at Stephen F. Austin State University for three years where she designed numerous shows including Skin of Our Teeth, Mary Zimmerman’s Arabian Nights, A Year with Frog and Toad, and Picasso at the Lapin Agile. Prior to Stephen F Austin, Tara taught at Texas State University as a Visiting Assistant Professor. While there, she designed Somebody Called and Titus Andronicus and returned the following school year to design RENT. Before working in education, Tara was the Charge Scenic Artist at Alabama Shakespeare Festival and Music Theatre of Wichita. Before working at Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Tara served as a Scenic Design Assistant at the Denver Center Theatre Company. Her design work has been featured at Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre, Austin Shakespeare, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Music Theatre of Wichita, the Celebration Company at the Station Theatre, and others. Her scenic art work has been featured at Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Clarence Brown Theatre, Arizona Theatre Company, Music Theatre of Wichita, and others. After receiving her BFA in Scenic Design and Scenic Art at the University of Arizona, Tara graduated with her MFA in Scenic Design from the University of Illinois. She is a member of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, the Guild of Scenic Artists, and is part of the Steering Committee for the Latinx Theatre Commons.
