Certificate of Education Specialist (EdS) in Curriculum & Instruction: Special Education

Overview

The EdS certificate is intended for teachers, counselors, supervisors, and administrators in elementary and secondary schools. Special educators who have earned a Master of Education degree are the ideal professionals to pursue the Specialist Certificate. Graduate hours earned during a master's degree and related to remedial or special education may be applied toward the 60-hour program. Candidates often pursue certification coursework related to the educational diagnostician and/or reading specialist positions en route to the specialist degree. As with the master's degree, additional academic and/or behavioral professional expertise may be the candidate goal.

Program Structure

A minimum of 60 hours of graduate credit — which may include hours earned in the master’s degree — is required. All programs must be approved by the student's departmental advisor.
