University Volunteers Build Playground for Local Elementary School

03/13/2009

More than 200 volunteers were on hand Saturday, March 28, at University Terrace Elementary School, near the LSU campus, to build a new playground for the school.

The day of service, organized by LSU biological and agricultural engineeringprofessor Marybeth Lima, constructed a composite playground structure and swing-set for the preschool, kindergarten and first-grade; a tricycle track; an edible garden; and an outdoor classroom for the school.

LSU students, faculty and staff, along with volunteers from various civic and religious organizations in the community, were on hand, including attendees to the 2009 Gulf-South Summit on Service-Learning and Civic Engagement through Higher Education, which was put on by LSU’s Center for Community Engagement, Learning, and Leadership, or CCELL, last week at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at noon, featuring LSU Chancellor Michael Martin and several other university administrators, faculty and staff, as well as representatives of East Baton Rouge Parish and the parish school district.

Forty-seven community partners assisted University Terrace with money, materials or volunteers to the effort.
